Project Description
Ireland is Intel's manufacturing and technology centre for Europe. The Intel Ireland campus, in County Kildare, is Intel's fourth largest manufacturing site worldwide, and the largest outside the United States. The Ireland site is at the forefront of sustainable plant operations across Intel worldwide by voluntarily investing more than $6 million in energy conservation projects in recent years.
Examples of projects range from the small, such as the change of heating set points, to the large such as use of heat recovery system to utilise waste heat from operations. This has resulted in a 20% reduction in natural gas consumption (from 2006-2007) even though the site expanded its manufacturing capability during that period.
Reduction activities in last 3 years have yielded savings of over 25,000 tonnes of CO2 in both site generated and carbon emitted by electricity generation. This is equivalent of taking over 9,100 cars off the road for a year.
As energy manager Kevin Geoghegan has been driving this energy efficiency for the site through engagement of employees, use of the technology and developing an energy research agenda. These activities have continued to be highlighted as examples to follow across the corporation.
