Dundalk 2020
The Dundalk Sustainable Energy Zone (SEZ) is a four square kilometre area, stretching from the hospital and Hoey’s Lane to the Fairways Hotel, and from Blackrock road to Mullagharlin Road. The Dundalk SEZ was chosen as it demonstrates mixed urban use, i.e. residential, industrial, retail, leisure and educational facilities are all located in the defined geographic area.

Targets

Dundalk 2020, set itself targets to achieve:

  • 20% renewable heat
  • 20% renewable electricity, and
  • 40% energy efficiency in selected buildings

It was estimated that these targets, once reached, would reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by 10,000 tonnes each year.

Many other stakeholders have worked closely with SEAI to deliver the Dundalk 2020 targets, such as Ard Easmuinn Residents Association, Glen Dimplex and Kingspan Renewables. The mix of stakeholders involved in the Dundalk 2020 project supports the view that everyone has a part to play in the development of a successful Sustainable Energy Community.

Non residential buildings:

  • Energy efficiency improvement at Louth County Hall
  • Refurbishment to St. Oliver Plunkett nursing home.
  • Refurbishment to O’Fiaich College
  • Refurbishment of the Carroll’s building; Carrolls, a former cigarette-manufacturing factory, was refurbished by Dundalk Institute of Technology and is now used for educational purposes

Residential

  • Refurbishment of local authority housing stock
  • A research project by Glen Dimplex to installation sensor and control technology at student accommodation located at Dundalk IT campus
  • Case study: Energy profile methodology for local authority housing stock

Generation and storage

  • Wind generation – 850 kW wind turbine installed and operating at the Dundalk IT campus
  • Photovoltaic – 30 kWp installed at O’Fiaich College
  • Flow battery – a 125 kW ZBB flow battery installed at the Dundalk IT campus
  • Ice banks
  • Biomass generation - development in conjunction with Teagasc and local Dundalk farmers a energy crop calculator
